2020 NFL Draft: Curtis Weaver, Eno Benjamin and other Day 3 picks who can be instant impact rookies

Last year, it was Gardner Minshew, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and Maxx Crosby. In 2018, Taron Johnson, Genard Avery, and Avonte Maddox. The season before it was Eddie Jackson, Tarik Cohen, and George Kittle. In 2016, the group consisted of Dak Prescott, Jordan Howard, and Tyreek Hill. Those players were all Day 3 draft picks who surprised early on at the NFL ranks. The phenomenon happens every year.

While all the 2020 Day 3 selections listed below aren’t guaranteed to flourish as rookies, they have the best chance to make an instant impact due to their refined skill, athleticism, and opportunity on their respective teams.

Curtis Weaver, EDGE, Dolphins

Weaver was phenomenally productive at Boise State, and stat-sheet filter City boss Pep Guardiola has called out the media for burying stories about his Double winners.City can win an unprecedented Treble today by defeating Watford in the FA Cup final.”I think we did an incredible two seasons, but to be the best you haling began in his redshirt freshman season as a 19-year-old — 11 sacks, 13 tackles for loss — and never subsided. He finished his time with the Broncos with 34 sacks and 47.5 tackles for loss in three seasons. The high-level productivity starting at such a young age is an encouraging indicator of future success for Weaver. He wasn’t simply winning due to being older and more physically developed than his competition.

Weaver has a small but effective collection of pass-rushing moves too. Per the Pro Football Focus Draft Guide, Weaver recorded 114 quarterback pressures on his final 650 pass-rush snaps in 2018 and 2019 combined. That’s a pressure every 5.7 pass-rush snaps. For context, Chase Young registered 131 quarterback pressures on his final 790 pass-rush snaps at Ohio Stateas been struck between the two clubs, with HSV coughing up €2.5m for his transfer. Amaechi had a deal with Arsenal to 2020.HSV had been chasing the attacker’s signing for several months, while Bayern Munich had also expressed interest in recent wee, which equates to a pressure every 6.03 pass-rush snaps. Of course, a sizable difference in competition, but Weaver was insanely productive in college.

While not a freaky explosive athlete, Weaver can really flatten to the quarterback, a key (natural) ability that leads to big-play creation for an edge rusher, as opposed to those who can’t tightly bend the edge and are repeatedly pushed past the passer. Weaver running the three-cone drill in 7.00 seconds at the combine is the quantifiable evidence for his flattening skill. To hit the threshold on the nose at an ultra-compact 6-2 and 265 pounds aligns closely with similarly stocky defenders Jerry Hughes (6-2, 255 with a 6.99 three cone) and Justin Houston (6-3, 270 with a 6.95 three cone) who’ve long been successful edge rushers.

In Miami, he finds himself on a rebuilding roster that certainly spent heavily in free agency especially on the defensive side of the ball. However, new defensive end Shaq Lawson is predominantly a run-stopping specialist and Emmanuel Ogbah has never registered more than 5.5 sacks in his career. After those two at the edge-rusher position, the Dolphins have many bodies but loads of uncertainty, giving way to a prime opportunity for Weaver to step in immediately and outplay his draft position.

My  has the inherent talent and polished hand work to make a quick splash on South Beach for the Dolphins.

The 2021 draft is a year away, but it’s never too early to size things up. The Pick Six Podcast Superfriends, along with the experts on our Cover 3 Podcast, break everything down; listen below, and  for daily NFL goodness.

K’Von Wallace, S/CB, Eagles

Yes, the Eagles traded for star outside cornerback this offseason, however, as a whole, Philadelphia’s secondary has a long way to go before it’s a truly respectable unit. Many jobs are up for grabs.

Wallace will enter the NFL with a safety label but is truly a slot cornerback who occasionally carried out some free safety responsibilities in Clemson’s defense. With 4.53 speed, Wallace is somewhat of a liability running in man deep down the field. But his 38-inch vertical and quick 6.76 three-cone time translates to quick, explosive movements on the field, perfect for dealing with twitch slot receivers at the short and intermediate levels.

As a senior, he defended 10 passes and snagged a pair of interceptions to go along with a hefty 76 tackles. At 5-11 and 206 pounds, Wallace has a compact frame that allows him to play bigger than his size against the run. He’s very reliable as a tackler too.

Avonte Maddox has spent time in the slot for the Eagles but kicked outside in 2019. No one else in the defensive backfield has a firm grasp on the new-age safety/slot cornerback position. Wallace has the perfect skill set to be an instant, big-play contributor in Philadelphia’s secondary.

Joe Reed, WR, Chargers

Reed is a stocky, yards-after-the-catch monster who bounces off tackles and leaves defenders whiffing at the air like a true feature back. He averaged just 8.8 yards per reception in 2019, yet that low figure was almost strictly due to the way he was utilized at Virginia to accentuate his running back like prowess.

According to PFF’s Draft Guide, Reed forced 15 missed tackles on his 77 receptions, a rather high figure for a wideout mostly featured on short passes with plenty of defenders in close. At the combine, Reed exploded with a 4.47 time in the 40 and a 38-inch vertical at a compact 6-0, 224-pound frame.

Sure, Keenan Allen and are the top two wideouts in Los Angeles, but there’s a need for a quality No. 3 in Los Angeles in 2020. After Shane Steichen was promoted to offensive coordinator before Week 9, the Chargers utilized “11 sersonnel” (three-receiver set) 73% of their offensive snaps, the fourth-highest rate in football.

Reed was held back by poor quarterback accuracy down the field, and with his sub 4.50 speed, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the mid-round pick could become more of a deep option than he was in college.

Harrison Bryant, TE, Browns

For as much of advocate as I am for the predictive powers on the NFL Combine, each draft season I daringly go out on a limb and label a select few prospects draft crushes who just simply look more athletic than their workouts in Indianapolis.

Bryant is one of those prospects. Despite a rather , Bryant finished as my TE1 in a weak class. This year’s John Mackey Award winner — nation’s top tight end — finished with 1,004 yards on 65 receptions, a masterful culmination of a steadily improving three-year stint as a major contributor in Florida Atlantic’s offense.

Trait-wise, Bryant explodes out of his stance and when changing directions as a route-runner, and he’s one of the few tight ends in this class that truly threatens defenses down the field.

He’s a modern-day tight end.

And, although Cleveland signed Austin Hooper to a lucrative deal this offseason and 2017 first-round pick David Njoku remains on the roster, new head coach Kevin Stefanski adores utilizing two-tight end looks, so don’t be surprised if Cleveland utilizes a heavier rotation at that position that almost every other team in the league.

Eno Benjamin, RB, Cardinals

In my live grades on the Saturday of the draft, I wrote “no reason for Benjamin to still be on the board this late” whgue’s coronavirus suspension “isn’t ideal”.Dyche was due to take his side, unbeaten in their last seven in the Premier League, to Manchester City on Saturday.”I know where football is in my life, let alone the grand scheme of life,” said the Clarets en he was picked at No. 222 overall by Arizona.

At Arizona State, Benjamin shouldered a full workout for two seasons and after averaging 5.3 yards per tote on a whopping 300 carries in 2018, his production dipped to just 4.3 yards per carry on 253 rushes in 2019. Individually, Benjamin was a star, and he caught 77 passes in those two seasons, so we know he has reliable hands.

Before a sparkling combine, Benjamin demonstrated stellar elusiveness, contact balance, and vision, the three most vital skills to succeeding at the running back position. In 2018, per PFF, Benjamin forced 84 missed tackles, which trailed only Darrell Henderson and Devin Singletary in college football. On 300 carries, that equated to a forced missed tackle on 28% of his runs. He finished as my RB7 in this class.

Behind a worse offensive line on an offense starting a true freshman quarterback in 2019, Benjamin “only” forced 62 missed tackles, yet given that total came on 231 rushes, his forced missed tackle rate was still 26.8%.

Sure, he’s clearly behind transition tagged Kenyan Drake, and there’s Chase Edmonds ahead of him on Arizona’s running back depth chart. However, the Cardinals have 94 carries and 36 receptions from David Johnson in 2019 that are now up for grabs. Given that almost every team utilizes three runners throughout a season — particularly if injuries hit — it wouldn’t be shocking if Benjamin got an opportunity as a rookie, and based on his natural talent, it also wouldn’t be shocked if he instantly produced.

Cardinals draft Isaiah Simmons to plug multiple holes on defense as Arizona’s perfect offseason continues

Super Bowls aren’t won in the spring. The offseason champion seldom wins a championship — just ask the . After a five-win season, the certainly aren’t contenders, not in a league that features the likes of the and the or in a division that includes both the and .

But they’re experiencing the offseason of their wildest dreams, the kind of offseason that does translate to hope in the short term, and should translate to wins in the long term — and maybe, just maybe, a playoff berth as early as the coming season. Back in January, an a move to Carrow Road. The Motherwell youngster has rejected the newly promoted club for Scottish champions Celtic.”When you get turned down it’s never nice but at the same time, there’s always another player and we want players who genuinely want tfter the Cardinals finished their fourth-straight playoff-less season, it would’ve been impossible to imured a season-long loan deal for Sheffield United striker Tyler Smith. The 20-year-old spent time on loan at National League club Barrow and League One Doncaster Rovers last season. He scored 10 goals for Barrow during his five-month spell and netted aagine their offseason unfolding as well as it has, at least as of Thursday night. Even still, it would take a catastrophe in the mid-to-late rounds on Friday and Saturday for the Cardinals’ offseason not to be considered a roaring success.

A little more than a month after , the Cardinals entered Thursday night’s virtual draft with ultimate flexibility. The offensive line and pretty much every area on defense were clear needs, but even taking a receiver like CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy would’ve been justifiable. Picking at No. 8,  Three of the first six picks were quarterbacks — the one area the Cardinals don’t have a need at with , after , locked in as the team’s franchise quarterback. , the took a defensive tackle in , even though they just lost linebacker to an early retirement and the draft’s best linebacker, , was sitting there.

Which left  at No. 8.

There’s an argument to be made that protecting Murray by taking an offensive lineman would’ve filled a bigger need, but in Simmons, the Cardinals are getting a player who fills more than one need on a defense with more than one hole. A year ago, the Cardinals trotted out the league’s . They already had at edge rusher and at cornerback — two of the league’s best players at their respective position groups — and they added at defensive tackle and at linebacker during free agency, but the Cardinals still needed another pass rusher to compliment Jones, another linebacker to support Campbell, and another cover guy to help Peterson.

It’s quite possible the Cardinals got all three in one player. Simmons might be listed as a linebacker, but he’s more than just a linebacker. He’s drawn comparisons to  (an All-Pro linebacker) and  (an All-Pro safety). He has tremendous speed (4.39 40-yard dash), length, size (6-foot-4), and athleticism. He can line up anywhere, as he did at Clemson, where he just captured the Dick Butkus Award.

In the modern , versatility holds tremendous value. Simmons can rush the passer. He can drop back into coverage. He can defend against the run. For a team that needed to fill more than one hole on defense to emerge as a playoff-caliber team, what player had more value to them than Simmons?

It’s true that a need at offensive line still exists. A year ago, the Cardinals allowed Murray to get sacked 48 times. But Murray, himself, was responsible for some of those sacks. It’s worth noting that the Cardinals’ offensive line ranked  The Cardinals should try to upgrade the offensive line in the middle rounds — someone like Prince Tega Wanogho out of Auburn could be in play in the third round, when the Cardinals pick again (barring a trade up) — but there’s an argument to be made that getting a premium player on defense was a more urgent need.

Which is exactly what the Cardinals got. There’s not another player like Simmons in this draft.

Two more days in the draft are still to come. The Cardinals aren’t scheduled to pick again until No. 72. More work remains for a team stuck in the league’s toughest division.

But in one offseason alone, they added arguably the league’s best receiver in Hopkins, an underrated defensive tackle in Phillips, a starting-caliber linebacker in Campbell, and now, a /  linebacker/safety hybrid. As the picks continue to roll in between now and Saturday night, the Cardinals can sit back — Kliff Kingsbury style — and akipper accused his team-mates of not being brave enough to keep the ball.Kane said: “Whenever you lose, you can never be encouraged.“We battled but you expect that at this level in every game.“It’s disappointing being 1-0 up at half-time, beingdmire what they’ve accomplished in one offseason alone.

Jameis Winston’s future: Bruce Arians says he’ll wait until after the season to make a decision on QB

quarterback has had a bit of an up-and-down year in 2019. The same problems that have hampered him during his first four seasons in the have carried over to his fifth, but there have been some bright spots.

Back in Week 4, Winston and the Bucs put up a franchise-record 55 points on the , as the former No. 1 overall pick threw for 385 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Thereve to Barcelona.Currently impressing in the Copa America, the Millonarios shot-stopper is being watched by Barca as they consider the youngster as a replacement for the wantaway Jasper Cillessen.”Of course I would like (to go to Barca), for all playe have also been struggles, however. Winston accounted for five interceptions and a fumble against the in London back in Week 6, as the Buccaneers lost their second in what would turn into a four-game losing streak.

This was supposed to be the year where Winston either proved he was worth an extension or not. On Wednesday, head coach Bruce Arians said that he’s going to wait until the end of the season to sit down and make a decision on Winston’s future.

“,” Arians said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m going to wait until the end of December. There’s been really, really good and there’s been some really, really bad.”

Through 12 games, Winston has completed 60.2% of his passes for 3,659 yards, 22 touchdowns and a career-high 20 interceptions. Arians has been consistent all season in that he wants his young quarterback to just go out and let it fly.

“, and that’s one of my biggest messages to Jameis,” Arians said back in October. Nelson Semedo is prepared to leave Barcelona this summer. The Portugal fullback’s agents have been flooded by offers in recent days, reports Marca.Barca are willing to sell €35m and Semedo would ne.The leaked chart shows how much money first team players would have to pay the club if they breached the rules laid out by manager Frank Lampard. The fines are eye popping for the average person, but may not be as much of an issue given the salary oot be against leaving for guaranteed football. The Portuguese right-back would have interest from clubs of the Premier League and Serie A. Semedo is tied to Barca until 2022.”Throw it. Don’t worry about it, just throw it.”

The Buccaneers take on the , , and then the to close out the season. With only one of those teams having a winning record, Winston should have a chance to prove to the franchise that he’s the right signal-caller moving forward. The question is, will he take advantage of the opportunity?

Former quarterback returned to AT&T Stadium as an announcer for the first time on Sunday. Romo is working as the analyst for the No. 1 team here at CBS Sports, and he and Jim Nantz are on the call for Sunday afternoon’s Chiefs-Cowboys game.

The video was narrated by Romo’s best friend on the team, tight end .

Before the crowd stood up to give Romo a long standing ovation, Witten said in closing, “Tony Romo taught us all what it mean to love a game — the greatest game on earth. And for that we say, ‘Thank you, 9.'”

Packers vs. Cowboys final score, things to know: Aaron Rodgers stuns Dallas in thriller

Sunday morning began with some . tossed a career-high five picks. gave a vintage Matt Cassel performance. and combined for 187 yards — and both won!

Thankfully, the late afternoon window of games featured a matchup between the and .

They didn’t disappoint. and provided a reminder that good quarterbacks do, in fact, still exist. In one of the best games of the season — not just in terms of entertainment, but also in terms of quality — the Packers edged the Cowboys, 35-31, thanks to this godly game-winning touchdown from Rodgers to .

Of note: This By now, it’s sorta becoming Rodgers’ thing. I don’t think anyone has forgotten how the Cowboys’ dream run ended a season ago.

It wasn’t just the ending on Sunday. The game was great from the start.

The Cowboys immediately put the Packers in a hole. On the opening drive of er his success with RB Salzburg.Haaland hit a Champions League hat-trick against Genk last night.Solskjaer said of his former Molde protege: “It was nice watching the game last night, it was great watching him. “Everyone’s excited by his development.the game, they journeyed 75 yards on 12 plays — using a fourth-down conversion and — and reached the end zone when Prescott connected with for a two-yard touchdown. But the Packers responded with their own 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with a perfectly placed strike from Rodgers to Adams. , however, missed the extra point.

The Cowboys responded to the Packers’ response by mounting another scoring drive. We were off to a blistering start.

The Cowboys’ second drive ended the same way: a touchdown pass from Prescott to Beasley. That gave them a 14-6 lead. Their lead would grow to 21-6 on their third drive when Prescott threw his third touchdown, this time to .

But the Packers struck just before halftime with an touchdown run. Again, a missed extra point haunted the Packers. They entered the break down 21-12 — a two-possession game instead of a one-score game. And possessions were limited. The Cowboys had four in the first half; the Packers three.

The Cowboys clearly entered the game with a plan: limit Rodgers’ chances. And it worked — for a half, at least. The other part of their plan — use the sun to blind Rodgers — worked throughout the entire game.

The third quarter belonged to the Packers. They kicked a 22-yard field goal after a lengthy drive to close the gap to six points. After forcing the Cowboys to punt — well, the Cowboys chose to punt on fourth-and-short for — the Packers marched right back down the field. On the first play of the fourth quarter, they capped their 14-play drive, which was aided by multiple penalties, with a scoring strike from Rodgers to Jordy Nelson. The Packers took a 22-21 lead with almost an entire quarter left to play.

And then came alive after a quiet first three quarters. On the ensuing drive, two big runs by Elliott put the Cowboys in field goal position. They retook the lead, 24-22.

The lead held up until Prescott threw his fourth touchdown. but this one counted for the Packers.

Clearly, that isn’t on Prescott. It’s on for dropping an easy catch, which gave a free pick-six. That’s how the Packers took a 28-24 lead after a failed two-point conversion.

The Cowboys’ response? A mammoth eight-minute drive (17 plays, 79 yards) that involved a clutch fourth down run by Elliott and ended with a Prescott touchdown run on a zone-read. With 1:13 remaining in the game, the Cowboys led by three.

The only problem? The Cowboys scored too soon. Rodgers had more than a minute and a timeout to get Crosby into field goal range. For Rodgers, getting into field goal range was simply a formality. Crosby making the kick, however, was no guarantee, considering he’d already missed two extra points.

So Rodgers didn’t settle for a field goal. He ended the game then and there with a perfect throw to Adams because he’s Aaron freakin’ Rodgers and Aaron freakin’ Rodgers does whatever the heck he wants, when he wants, to who he wants. It just so happens that he loves doing it to the Cowboys in Dallas.

Before the game went final, though, we were given one of more entertaining final lateral plays you’ll ever see.

Read on for seven takeaways from the game.

1. Dak Prescott was also brilliant

Don’t let what Rodgers did at the end of the game distract you from the fact that Prescott was also unreal. In all, Prescott went 25 of 36 for 251 yards, three touchdowns, a pick that wasn’t his fault, and a 105.2 passer rating. He added 37 yards and a score on the ground.

Don’t blame Dak, who was let down by his defense (again), for the Cowboys’ loss.

He was sharp from the beginning. On the Cowboys’ opening scoring drive, he converted a third-and-14 with a ridiculous throw to .

He finished the drive with an easy scoring toss to Beasley. He found Beasley again for his second touchdown.

Finally, he decided to spread the ball around, throwing his third touchdown of the first half to Bryant. His fourth touchdown likely would’ve been a game-winner if he was going up against anyone other than Rodgers.

Unfortunately, Prescott scored too soon.

2. But Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers

Even before his game-winner, Rodgers was his normal great self on Sunday. He finished 19 of 29 for 221 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, and a 122.9 passer rating.

Somdward believes manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be a “walking, talking” version of the club’s philosophy. He told United We Stand fanzine, “Winning; playing attacking football with players that have an ‘x-factor’; and giving youth a chance.”Added to te of his touchdowns were easy:

Others weren’t so easy, requiring the kind of precision that only a few quarterbacks are capable of:

What more is there to say? Rodgers did it all. He used his athleticism to escape pressure at timely moments (32 yards on four scrambles), he made more than a few jaw-dropping throws, and he ended his day with a game-winning touchdown.

AT&T Stadium now belongs to Rodgers.

3. Dez fizzles after hot start, Zeke heats up after slow start

Entering Sunday, Bryant was averaging 53 receiving yards per game. On Sunday, Bryant started hot, catching this touchdown from Prescott.

But he disappeared in the second half. He finished with five catches and 52 yards. That kind of outing won’t quell the rumblings that Bryant is no longer an elitna striker will need at least six months to recover from his hamstring injury.Dembele underwent an operation in Finland this week. His surgeon Lasse Lempeinen stated: “The operation went well, everything went according to plan. As we had already este WR1.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys’ other star, Elliott, looked sluggish in the early going before coming alive in the fourth quarter. He rumbled for a couple big gains to get the Cowboys into field goal range and picked up a huge fourth down late in the fourth quarter. He finished with 116 yards on 29 carries (4.0 yards per attempt).

4. Aaron Jones earned more carries

Aaron Jones only started for the Packers on Sunday because and both missed the game with injuries. Moving forward, he should receive plenty of playing time regardless of Montgomery and Williams’ health. Jones is too good to leave on the sidelines.

On Sunday, he rushed for 125 yards on 19 carries (6.6 yards per carry). He also scored the only non-Rodgers offensive touchdown for the Packers.

Runs like this demonstrate his skill set:

The Packers found a running back to pair with Montgomery. Heck, maybe it’s Montgomery that will be paired with Jones moving forward.

5.  returns

The Cowboys were in desperate need of another pass rusher to pair alongside . David Irving is that pass rusher. After missing the first four games of the season due to , he made his 2017 debut on Sunday. He looked brilliant, racking up two sacks.

The Cowboys lost the game, but Irving will help them cover up their weakness (defense) down the stretch.

6. Davante Adams is more than just healthy

Less than two weeks ago, to the head against the . He didn’t miss a game, returning on Sunday.

And he was awesome, totaling seven catches, 66 yards, and two touchdowns — one of those touchdowns was the game-winner, of course.

7. What’s next?

The 2-3 Cowboys will enjoy a bye week before heading to San Francisco for what could be an easy bounce-back win. Meanwhile, the 4-1 Packers have a tough matchup against the in Minnesota next week.
