Mash the Swedes! Redknapp urges England to push hard for all three points on Friday

Harry Redknapp believes nothing short of three points will sufficontent_imgce for England in their second Euro 2012 Group D match with Sweden on Friday. Redknapp, a frontrunner for the national team job until the Football Association appointed Roy Hodgson last month, believes an ageing Sweden side should pose few problems for England. The Tottenham boss highlighted Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a threat but believes a lack of talent around the striker means England should not lose too much sleep against a er United have been offered defender Jerome Boateng by Bayern Munich.Jose Mourinho contemplated a move for the centre-back during his last summer in charge at Old Trafford but club executives vetoed the move.Bayern wanted £50million for Boateng but side that began their European Champions taken steps to make its home ground more inclusive to disabled supporters by installing a Changing Place facility, reports www.fcbusiness.co.ukThese changes are part of an ongoing stadium expansion that will see more accessibility around the Jimmy ship campaign with a 2-1 defeat to co-hosts Ukraine yesterday. "We all know about Zlatan Ibrahimovic but there's not that much quality around him," Redknapp said. "Anders Svensson played for me at Southampton and he's 35 now! He came on for half an hour last night, while Olof Mellberg, 34, played all 90 minutes. "I'm not sure what Jonas Olsson was doing on the bench, he's a player I really like for West Brom and I don't think he'd have been caught out like Mellberg was for Ukraine's first goal. "There's not enough talent in the Swedish line-up and I think England have to go for the win from the second game in Group D." Redknapp also was also full of praise for England's performance in their 1-1 draw against France in Donetsk last night. "I particularly liked what I saw at the back, especially Glen Johnson, who got forward plenty of times and looked a real danger," added the 65-year-old. "The five are a good unit and I back them to keep a clean sheet against the Swedish attack."

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce heaps praise on skipper Kevin Nolan after comeback win over Southampton

Sam Allardyce has heaped praise on Hammers skipper Kevin Nolan following . came under fire over the Christmas and New Year period, when he was sent off twice in four weeks, leading Allardyce to say "there's something wrong with his mentality at the minute". "I can believe the turnaround because I know Kevin's qualities," Allardyce told Sky Sports. "What I like about it is that he has gone about his job and made sure he repays everybody at the club for what happened. "It was the lowest point of his career, I think, because it was not just one sending off but two in a short period of time. Why I would pick John Terry and Rio Ferdinand for the Euros

Roy Hodgson has made a brave decision in leaving Rio Ferdinand out of the 23-man England squad he will name this afternoon. It will soon become clearer whether he has made his choice on the basis of fitness, form, dressing-room harmony or a combination of all three. Still, it represents a gamble from the England boss, especially given that the relationship between F be considered title contenders. After victory over Aston Villa, the Foxes are now eight points behind leaders Liverpool.“We’re up there, we’re challenging and playing well,” Evans said.“Probably now people will start talking more about that.“Iterdinand and John Terry has become such a charged issue. Some have argued that neither man should be included. Others that only one should go. They are rational arguments, too, based on legitimate concerns about whether squad morale might suffer and, worst of all, the idea the group might become split along raciah Hull City’s price for Jarrod Bowen. The Telegraph says Newcastle are said to be less than impressed with Hull’s £20m demand for Bowen. The Magpies have been linked with a move for the Tigers’ forward this month following his impressive 16 goals in tl lines. My own view is that it was impossible for Terry to remain as captain of a multi-racial team while he is awaiting trial. But not even to take him to the tournament before he has been judged would be excessive. My choice would have been to take both Terry and Ferdinand to Poland and Ukraine. The rationale is simple: when they’re fit, they are still our best central defenders. My 23 would be: Hart, Foster, Butland – Richards, Terry, R Ferdinand, Cahill, Lescott, Cole, Baines – Walcott, Cleverley, Gerrard, Lampard, Parker, Jones, Young, Milner – Carroll, Welbeck, Rooney, Defoe, Crouch. Starting XI v France: Hart; Richards, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Pacontent_imgrker, Lampard;Walcott, Gerrard, Young; Welbeck.

Premier League on New Year’s Day: 5 things we learned as 2015 started with a bang

The Premier League offered up an early treat on the opening day of 2015 as football fans were treated to a real festive feast on New Year's Day. There was an eight-goal thriller at White Hart Lane, six goals at St James' Park, five at the Etihad and four at Anfield as 33 goals were plundered across 10 games. Unfortunately for supporters at Aston Villa, they didn't see any. They'll tell you that's no surprise. Anyway, here's a look at five things we learned on the opening day of 2015: Harry Kane continues his impressive march If there was one footballer in England who would have been happy for 2014 to carry on and just not bother turning into 2015, then it would have been Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Rewind 12 months and Kane's career looked to be meandering; never mind failing to take off, he'd not even made it down the runway. Loan spells in 2012-13 at Norwich and Leicescontent_imgter had proven disappointing, with Kane scoring just twice in 13 Championship matches for the Foxes, having been discarded from a loan spell at Carrow Road after just three scoreless games. What followed were four months as part of were he featured for just eight minutes of Premier League action. But since being utilised by Tim Sherwood at the back end of last season (scoring three times in the last six matches) Kane has set about refusing the notion that he can't make it at White Hart Lane – becoming a cult hero in the process. "He's one of our own" sing the Spurs fans about , and Kane's enthusiasm and growth, particularly under Mauricio Pochettino, has become infectious; so much so that he is now probably the second name on team sheet, behind only Hugo Lloris. Kane has forced his way into the starting XI with an outstanding scoring run in the Europa League (seven goals in as many games) and is now netting regularly in England's top flight, with his brace against Chelsea making it five goals in as many games. But more than that, his development into a complete centre-forward has been staggering. More confident, he looks quicker, stronger, more assured with his touch, happier to rough-up centre-halves and is a non-stop buzzard at the point of Spurs attacking play. Continue like this, and talk of England will turn to "should he start" rather than merely whether he should be called up or not. Arsene Wenger deserves more In the 85th minute at St Mary's Stadium, with his side having been pretty dismal and Arsene Wenger sat in the dugout, with his hand rubbing his brow. At that moment a fan ran in front of the Frenchman, arms outstretched, angrily looking for answers. It's something that Wenger, after that barrage at the train station following his side's last defeat, doesn't need, nor deserve. But on the field, his side have looked like getting it together in recent weeks, producing what they always produce and doing as they always do: finishing in the top four. And while that isn't enough for some, you have to marvel at their consistency to do so. However, the level of their performance on the south coast varied wildly from recent matches. said the Saints Ronald Koeman's side certainly didn't look at their best defelieves Harry Maguire could have a transformative affect on Manchester City in a similar fashion to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool. The Leicester City defender is one of Pep Guardiola’s only transfer targets this summer. And former Foxes midfielder Iborrensively. But that doesn't take into account the wild variance of his own side. Good enough recently to take 10 points from a possible 12, they were a couple of levels below a level today that you would merely deem acceptable, given the talent they have at their disposal. Wenger expects better from 'fans' barracking him at a train station. He now deserves a response from who in another 'big' game, let him down. Manchester United still some way away – but why? Louis van Gaal in the opening match of 2015 and was moaning at their inability to deal with Peter Crouch at set-pieces. On social media, some United fans continue pointed towards the result as a step forward, that the side are one in transition and that third should be the limit to their expectations this term. What rubbish. In Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, United had a front four that – going on their last transfer fees – cost a combined £147million, and all of whom are proven match winners. Throw in £28million Luke Shaw, £26million Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick playing extremely well and the outstanding David De Gea, and I'm sorry, but you SHOULD be winning at Stoke and you SHOULD be challenging for the title. To say that they shouldn't is to pay too much attention to the club's propaganda. Van Gaal undertook an extremely-expensive remodel in the summer, paying huge fees and massive wages. Why didn't he purchase a midfield general to dovetail with Carrick? Why didn't he spend on a defensive leader? No one said he had to spend all his money on attacking players. Filling both areas were necessities in the summer. But van Gaal elected not to. Now his side effectively play with a chasm between Carrick and Rooney/Mata – Angel Di Maria's return will help, but his exact role has been undefined thus far – and three centre-halves, new to the system, who, in all honesty, their manager doesn't particularly look as though he rates. So why didn't he buy a defender in the summer? Maybe if he had done, they'd be closer. For the overall value of their squad, they should be. No New Year cheer for Paul Lambert It's claimed that misery loves company, and at Villa Park over 27,000 Aston Villa supporters settled down to watch their side offer yet another damp squib of a performance. There were plenty of Premier League goals to open the New Year. But unsurprisingly, failed to add to their paltry total of 11 goals this season Supporters in claret and blue are starting to run out of patience with the tactics of their manager, after seeing his side draw a blank for the fifth time in 10 home games this term; Christian Benteke is the prototype for the modern-day No.9, but behind him is an insipid side who lack creativity, class and look scared to try to penetrate their opponents – whoever they may be. But it isn't anything new. Since Lambert's arrival at the start of the 2012-13 e club. The Danish international wants a move to Spain this summer or next.He will be free to move to the club of his choosing as his contract only has a year to run.But Redknapp thinks that Eriksen must be convinced to stay to help the team win trophcampaign, Villa average just 1.01 goals per game in the Premier League, while they've won just 13 of 48 matches in front of their own supporters – failing to score in 19 of those matches. Now, given their dismal goalscoring figures and utterly abysmal home record – two wins from 10 games – it's laughable that the Villans sit 12th in the Premier League and something of an indictment over the 'quality' of the division as a whole. It's also laughable that owner Randy Lerner – who lest we forget handed a four-year deal – isn't now asking serious questions of his manager; namely, can you rectify these problems? Certainly, it doesn't seem he can. There's plenty of fight left at the bottom The start of 2015 and it's unusual for the fact that the bottom six ALL avoided defeat as they continue to scrap and battle for their lives. made it two wins in three games to be the big winners of the sextet, moving out of the relegation zone. QPR, leading 1-0 against Swansea until injury-time, – though they still almost claimed an even later winner through Charlie Austin. Leicester City showed tremendous fortitude to come from two down at Anfield while to share the spoils at Newcastle. Crystal Palace meanwhile took a point from Villa Park. And West Brom, – a man who has never been relegated – with Saido Berahino back among the goals. All six are struggling, along with Sunderland – who themselves fought from two down at Manchester City before succumbing to Frank Lampard – but all are fighting for their lives. The next five months promise to be busy at both ends of the table. He’s no Fer-llaini! Moody Moyes denies it’s Leroy in and Marouane Fellaini out

David Moyes has angrily dismissed as “tosh” claims that he wants to sign Leroy Fer to replace Marouane Fellaini. Everton still hope to complete Fer’s signing from FC Twente, even though the Dutch midfielder’s Tuesday medical threw up a problem. Everton want to restructure their £8.6million deal with Tweses with Christian Eriksen. The Danish playmaker is enduring a difficult season in North London, after refusing to sign a new contract this summer.Eriksen has an expiring deal at the end of this season, which means he can talk to clubs outside Englandnte so they pay a smaller amount up front with the remainder dependent on appearances and other factors. Moyes claims he is not going after Fer to enable him to cash in on the coveted Fellaini. “I read something about him replacing Fellaini and that’s the biggest load of tosh I have heard,” said the Everton boss. “That’s nonsense, whoever wrote or said that. “They are different types of players. No, that’s not the reason for bringing him, that’s for sure.” Read Dutch football blogger Mo Moallim's . Moyes claims Fer can give Everton the lift he feels they need – if his transfer goes through – as they battle with Tottenham and Arsenal for fourth place. “I felt that we are in a really strong position and that we should try and strengthen that position and stay there if we can,” he said. “I would hate to look back and think I hadn’t given that a go or made any attempt to do that. “The squad needs help. I think the squad has done brilliant to get where it has got, but it could do with one or two additions.” Moyes, who refused to discuss his future after being linked with Chelsea again, also hopes to bring in a right-back and a striker before Thursday’s transfer deadline. He feels another defender is a priority because regular right-back Seamus Coleman is out for up to four weeks with a thigh injury. and Leeds’ Sam Byram, although he does not know if his limited budget will stretch to landing one of them. “Seamus’ injury has made me consider whether I have to bring in another right-back because we are short with what we have got,” he said. Everton face West Brom on Wednesday, before playing Aston Villa on Saturday in successive home games. Moyes feels the next few days, on and off the pitch, could have a huge bearing for their season. “If we could get who we want now, but, more importantly, pick up the points from these two home games, that would give us a platform,” he said. “If we could get these points, it would give us a chance going into the last 12 or 14 games in a pretty strong position. “That’s why we want to do what we’re trying to do. We’ve flowed better this season. We need to keep grinding out the results until we get back into our stride a for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.Sport says United have “significantly improved” their offer to tempt a player who has already become one of the stories of the summer transfer window. This follows reports optimism at Barca had dwindled over the siglittle bit. “We’ll try and get ourselves back playing the way we were at the early part of the season and if we do that, we’ll have a great chance.” Crocks of gold set to return Steve Clarke expects West Brom to rediscover their "flying" form now their injury crisis is over. Baggies boss Clarke has Shane Long, Marc-Antoine Fortune, Steven Reid and Claudio Yacob available to face Everton. West Brom head to Goodison Park, looking to close the four-point gap between them and their hosts. Albion have not won in four League games after a sparkling start to the season. But Clarke said: "We have had a number of injuries to key players. We have lost key players at different times and it has upset the momentum. "First thing is to get them all on the training pitch. Swansea 1-1 Tottenham: Daily Mirror match report

As the post-match rain teemed down at the Liberty Stadium, Rafa van der Vaart tried to look on the bright side. Swansea had played Dutch-style football, claimed the former Ajax star, and other top teams had suffered worse results this weekend. But the scorer of Tottenham’s goal knew a bigger chance had been missed. Fate had beckoned Harry Redknapp’s in-form side within touching distance of Manchester United after Saturday’s shock lunchtime defeat to Blackburn. Van der Vaart said: “Was it a missed opportunity? Yes. It wasn’t a bad day though. Chelsea lost and Man United lost – but we needed that win and then the competition is open. “You can’t play every game at your top level but you need to win these kind of games when everyone is not at their best. That is why I am disappointed.” Third-placed Spurs are still on a great streak of only one defeat in 16 Premier League games stretching back to August. “We still have the feeling we are there at the top of the table and we are pleased with that,” Van der Vaart said. “Can we catch the Manchester teams? Why not? There is still a long way to go. We have the squad to win the title but the experience that Man United has, we don’t have that yet. “And Man City have too many good players. So they are sure to be at the top of the table. “We have to do it step by step and then, at the end, we will see what happens because these types of games, normally you need to win them.” Van der Vaart’s first goal since October – a volley deflected home off Ashley Williams – gave Spurs the lead just before the break. But three second-half substitutions made by Brendan Rodgers, and the departure of the Dutchman and the injured Scott Parker, saw Swansea grab the momentum. Redknapp described the Swans’ passing game as “great for football” but labelled their equaliser as a “catalogue of errors”. William Gallas and Brad Friedel failed to deal with Angel Rangel’s low cross and Scott Sinclair tapped home. “I like that kind of team – they played some fantastic football,” Van der Vaart added. “It is a little bit the Dutch style and I really like to watch that.” Rodgers, who made six changes to his side, said: “Thiscontent_img gives us the confidence that we can stay in the league.
